One question I had was, why does Chapter 34 start out with talking about the watermelon? I wasn't understanding why the watermelon was so important. The way on page 223, Huck says, "Watermelon shows man, lock shows prisoner;..." (Twain, 223). I guess I have been confused as to why Huck is relating everything to watermelon instead of something else. Like why is this fruit so different from any other? Why couldn't Huck have chosen something else to relate it to?
I noticed that Huck isn't only just dependent on Jim for ideas and to be told what to do, He is also dependent on Tom. It seems as if Huck can never make his own decisions through this entire book; he is always waiting for some one else to make the decision and then he follows along with it. For instance, Huck never left until morning only because Tom said it would be better to have some light, on page 229. It seems as if every time Huck tries to make his own decision in a matter, Tom or Jim chimes in and they do it their own way.
I did not like the way they all seem to talk to each other. It's as if they are enemies but friends at the same time. It makes the entire book very confusing to read and comprehend. Maybe that is just Mark Twain's style of writing; and this book was written a long time ago. Also, the accent that Jim and Huck have also correspond to this confusion I am experiencing with reading it.
