In Art 2 and in my independent art study class, I made a clay box, a small little bowl, and a rubix cube. For the box, i had to use a rolling pin and wood planks to roll out the clay in order to make the clay slabs for the sides and bottom of the box. Then, I used the score and slip method to attach all the sides to the bottom creating the box shape. After letting it sit for a day or two, I used the same methods to create a lid for the box. After measuring it out to fit the top of the box, I was finished. Then it was ready to be put into the kiln to get fired.
The next one did not take as long as the box did. I used the coil method to create the mini bowl. It's actually quite small so it only took about 5 - 10 minutes to create. Finally I created a small mini rubix cube. I shaped the clay into a small cube and then used a carving knife to score in the lines for the rubix cube details. Both of these clay projects only took a short amount of time but were fun to make.
I learned mainly about making slabs of clay. I learned that the slabs have to sit a day in the open air before being score and slipped together to the other slabs. They have to be fairly hard but yet a little bit bendable. Almost like leather or something, they need to be that way. I think overall, my projects turned out great and I like the way they look. :)
